What causes sewage backups in Miami?
There are a few usual causes.
- A blocked or collapsed drain line between your home and the main sewer
- Tree roots that grow into older pipes
- Heavy rain that overloads sewers and sends water back up low drains
- A failing septic system in areas that are not on public sewer
- A blocked shared stack in a condo or apartment building
Much of Miami-Dade is served by the county's water and sewer department, while some areas are on septic. Whether the blockage is on your side or the utility's side changes who fixes the pipe, so ask your plumber and your utility where the problem is. In a condo, tell building management right away, because a shared line can affect several units.
